GOLF IN PORTUGAL

In the Lisbon region, Oitavos Dunes, combines woodland and links elements as it offers fabulous views over the Atlantic Ocean against the backdrop of the Sintra Mountains. Host venue to 4 Portuguese Opens to date, the signature hole is the par 3 14th requiring a shot over a ravine to a hilltop green with dramatic views.

Just 30 minutes from the heart of Lisbon, Robert Trent Jones, Jr’s Penha Longa design is situated on an historic estate dating back to 1355. The championship course with  has wonderful elevation that offers stunning views over the coastal towns of Estoril and Cascais and is a past host venue of the Portuguese Open.

Nearby is the area known as the Silver Coast with the Cabell Robinson links and parkland layout of Praia D’el Rey; the highly acclaimed West Cliffs and Royal Obidos, designed by Seve Ballesteros

En route south to the Algarve, lies Terras da Comporto with 2 newer courses, Dunas and Torre.

Dunas is a David McLay Kidd masterpiece which is now officially the No. 1 Course in Portugal. The routing is characterized by towering sand dunes creating dramatic elevation changes and untamed sandy waste areas.

Torre is Sergio Garcia’s first design in Portugal. Torre features tight fairways and small greens. The theme is to favor precision and shotmaking over length and power.

The Algarve has deservedly risen in the past two decades as a world-class golf destination. With its year-round temperate climate and 100 miles of shoreline along the Atlantic Ocean the terrain is perfect for a variety of golf designs. So much so that is has always attracted the sport’s top architects and players in each generation Henry Cotton, Joe Lee, Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, Beau Welling and Ernie Els to name a few.

The North Course at Monte Rei, the first Jack Nicklaus Signature Course in Portugal immediately went to the No.1 position in the country upon opening in 2007. Situated on a beautiful Algarvean hillside the course offers stunning views down to the Atlantic Ocean with the Serra do Caldeirão Mountains forming the backdrop to the north.

Quinta do Lago – both North and South

The South Course has played host to 8 Portuguese Opens – but is equally delightful for amateurs as it is challenging for professionals. Refurbished in 2020, the layout features umbrella pine tree-lined fairways, bold bunkering and unlike other courses in the area – only a few water features.

The North Course is known for  its strong collection of par 5s; wonderful, tucked undulating green sites.

Dom Pedro Vilamoura Old

The Dom Pedro Old Course is the 1st golf course to be built in Vilamoura and one of the oldest courses in the Algarve but has been modernized to satisfy the needs of the contemporary game of golf.

Located in Vilamoura, this 18-hole course was designed by Frank Pennink and has a total distance of 6,254 m, meandering through lush parklands with mature pine trees that present a challenge for golfers who play on the golf courses of the Great Lady from the Algarve.

The original design has been maintained, with renovations to the course helping to make it one of the most renowned golf courses in the world.
